Frequently asked Questions about Wi-Fi Calling

Do I have to use Wi-Fi calling?

Nope! It's optional. Your regular calling still works the same way. WiFi calling just kicks in as a backup when signal gets weak or non existant and you are connected to a wifi network

Will I notice a difference?

Not really, it works like normal calling. Same service, same people you call, same experience. The difference is it won't drop when you're in a weak signal area.

Can I control when it's on or off?

Yep! You can toggle it on or off anytime in your settings on your device.

Does it use my data plan?

It uses Wi-Fi, not your data. So if you've got Wi-Fi, you're good.

What if my call switches from Wi-Fi to cellular network mid-call?

It happens automatically and seamlessly. You won't even notice.

Why would I ever use regular calling then?

Good question! You don't have to choose. Wi-Fi calling is there when you need it. Regular calling is still your main thing, WiFi calling is the safety net.

Is it secure?

Yep, it works just like your regular calls.

What phones does this work with?

All modern smartphones should be able to work with Wi-Fi calling. Check out your device manufacturers support pages to check if your phone does support Wi-Fi calling.

Will I be charged extra for Wi-Fi Calling?

No extra charges for using Wi-Fi Calling itself. Calls are charged the same as normal mobile calls based on your plan.

Q: Does Wi-Fi Calling work abroad?

Wifi Calling doesn't work abroad to call home or other countries.

Q: Why isn’t Wi-Fi Calling working for me?

Common reasons include:

  • Wi-Fi Calling not enable in settings

  • Weak or unstable Wi-Fi connection

  • Airplane mode not enabled in low signal areas

  • Device or carrier compatibility issues

Will emergency calls (999) work on Wi-Fi Calling?

Yes, but only if your device has a valid UK address registered and a stable Wi-Fi connection. If Wi-Fi fails, your phone will try to use mobile networks instead.

Can I use Wi-Fi Calling on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, etc.)?

Yes, but performance depends on the network quality. Some public Wi-Fi networks may restrict voice services.

Why does my phone sometimes switch back to mobile signal?

If your mobile signal becomes stronger or Wi-Fi weakens, your phone may automatically switch to mobile network for better call quality.

Do I need good internet speed for Wi-Fi Calling?

No high speed is needed, but a stable connection is important. Very weak or unstable Wi-Fi can cause call drops or poor audio.

Does Wi-Fi Calling drain my battery faster?

It can use slightly more battery than normal calling because your phone stays connected to Wi-Fi and cellular services at the same time, but the difference is usually small.

Can I send texts over Wi-Fi Calling?

No, SMS is not currently available over Wi-Fi.

Why don’t I see a Wi-Fi Calling icon?
